Diwali Celebrations and Black History🪔🎊

This week in Reception, we have been recognising the importance of and learning all about Diwali, the festival of light. We have been exploring a range of stories capturing what the festival is, why it is celebrated and how different people celebrate it. Some of us have even shared our personal experiences of celebrating Diwali with our families, with those who had little knowledge about the festival prior to this week, which was so wonderful to hear all about!⭐️

Not only this, but we were also lucky enough to participate in a Diwali dance workshop, exposing us all to a different style of dance and music. There are some amazing dancers in our class and everyone tried their hardest as always, it was very impressive!

In art, we got very crafty and hands on. We used clay to mould our very own diva lamps  and make patterns in them in our own unique ways. Once dry, we then painted our diva lamps with bright coloured paint to make them stand out, ready to light at home over half term for Diwali.🪔🎨

This week in maths, we looked at and created our own repeating patterns. We did this using numicon, everyday objects and even rangoli mats (which turned out amazing🤩). In phonics, we recapped the sounds ‘s’, ‘a’, ‘t’ and ‘p’ and wrote CVC words and sentences including ‘it is a mat’ linking to our Diwali focus.

Throughout October, we have been looking at Black History heroes including Bob Marley and Rosa Parks to celebrate Black History Month. We have done this through listening to music, reading inspiring stories and dancing. On Tuesday, we took part in a Black History dance workshop that focussed on Jamaican style dancing. The children put their all into the session and absolutely loved it, whilst learning all about its origins and development.

Have a lovely half-term and we will see you back to school after the holiday!

Keep practising your reading books📚
