Science Curriculum Intent

Our intent is built on the passion for the wonder and magic of early childhood. We believe every child has the right to play, to be collaborators in learning, to dream BIG and be UNIQUE! Moss Park Infant School is inspired by the values and pedagogy of Reggio Emilia in recognising how every child brings with them deep curiosity and potential and this innate curiosity drives their interest to understand their world and their place within it. Science is a core part of the curriculum, interlinked through other foundation subjects and the outdoor world. In Key Stage 1 we teach Science with a clear focus on the progression of skills between the year groups, developing children’s curiosity and using prior learning to create further learning opportunities within Science. Our curriculum is designed to create memorable moments and sticky knowledge, which will remain in pupils’ memories. This will be through a variety of carefully planned activities for the children of hooks and questions to excite and engage our children. In Early Years, Understanding the World, the children have opportunities to explore their world using the seasons to underpin their experiences and learning, by following their interests and by having real life experiences in their learning environments, both inside and outside. The important foundations of science and the awe and wonder that comes with it are laid down in the Early Years and are used as a basis for building onto in Key Stage 1. Children are taught scientific enquiry early on to ask questions and to make observations about what they see and do.
