History intent

'History will judge us by the difference we make in the

everyday lives of children'

Nelson Mandela

Intent

At Mosspark Infants we intend for our children to have real life experiences and learn about History in an active and creative way.  We aim for it to inspire pupils’ curiosity about the past and provide them with the skills and confidence to ask thought provoking questions. Our teaching equips the children to be inquisitive, think critically and develop their own opinions and judgement on what they learn about the past.

Implementation

In EYFS the early learning goals for History are centred on inspiring the children to show an interest in the lives of people familiar to them such as parents and grandparents through discussion. We support the children in the early years in exploring ways of preserving memories of special events through collecting photographs, making drawings and writing.

In Key Stage 1 we teach History through enquiry based learning. The teaching and planning of each lesson is sparked by the initial 'Big question' then the learning always begins with the skills and knowledge that needs to be taught which is done through enrichment opportunities, such as hook days and artefact exploration. Through the teaching of History we endeavour to teach our children to understand the complexity of people’s lives, the process of change, the impact of past events as well as their own identity and the challenges within their lifetimes.
